DELF & DALF
These exams, conducted by the French Ministry of Education, are
held twice a year at the Alliances in Pakistan. DELF and DALF
have been consistent with the Common European Framework of
Reference for Languages since 1 September 2005.
DELF A1
This level recognizes basic knowledge. It is the most basic
level at which a language is used, called the “discovery” stage.
At this stage, the learner can interact in a simple way: he/she
can speak about him/herself and his/her immediate environment.

DELF A2
DELF A2 is based on the same principle: it recognizes the
linguistic competency of a basic user, considered as a social
actor. The candidate can communicate in simple and routine tasks
requiring the most common polite phrases and exchanges of
information.

DELF B1
At this level, the user becomes independent. He/she can maintain
interaction: he/she can understand and maintain a discussion and
give his/her opinion. He/she is capable of dealing with
situations likely to arise in daily life.

DELF B2
A B2 user has a degree of independence that allows him/her to
construct arguments to defend his/her opinion, explain his/her
viewpoint and negotiate. At this level, the candidate has a
degree of fluency and spontaneity in regular interactions and is
capable of correcting his/her own mistakes.

DALF C1
Language user at level C1 is independent. Candidate can express
fluently and spontaneously. Candidate have a large vocabulary
and can choose the appropriate expression to introduce his/her
comments. Candidate can produce clear, well-structured discourse
without hesitation and which shows controlled use of structures.

DALF C2
C2 users' proficiency in the language is illustrated by
precision, appropriateness and fluency of expression. C2
candidates are capable of using the language for academic and
advanced-level purposes.

People who have passed the DALF (C1 or C2) are exempt from
taking language tests for entrance into French universities.

TEF
What is the TEF ?
The Test d'Evaluation du Français is awarded by the CCIP (Chambre
de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris/Chamber of Commerce and
Industry of Paris) This certificate is valid for one year from
the date the exam was taken. It is a reliable assessment of a
candidate's knowledge of French.
Who can enroll?
TEF is designed for any non-native speaker of French and does
not require any specific qualification or preparation.
What does the exam involve?
compulsory tests:
Reading comprehension
(60 minutes)
Listening comprehension
(40 minutes)
Language structures and vocabulary
(30 minutes)
Total length: 2 hours 30 minutes*

(35 minutes)
N.B. These tests are optional.

* Included 20 minutes for welcome speech.
Compulsory tests:
There are a total of 150 questions: 50 questions for reading
comprehension, 60 questions for listening comprehension, 40 on
vocabulary and language structures.
In each part of the test, the questions increase in difficulty.
Multiple-choice questions (generally 4 answers to choose from).
Only one correct answer.
For each test, the candidate must write their answers on the
answer sheet provided, which is then corrected by the CCIP
(computerized answer sheets).
Optional tests:
A candidate may choose to do one of the two options, or both at
the same time, within one year after the compulsory tests have
been taken.
Writing: in the first part, candidates must
write a story using the past tenses and in the second part they
must express and defend their point of view.
Speaking: in the first part, candidates must
get information by asking questions and in the second part they
must talk about the subject of a text and finally defend their
point of view.
It is to be noted that TEF is required for immigration purposes
by the Canadian Embassy.
Normally the TEF exam is held twice a year at the French centre.

TCF
Test de Connaissance du Français is the French Education
Ministry's test of French language ability. It is a language
placement test for non-native speakers of French who wish to
obtain a simple, effective and precise evaluation of their
general language skills for professional or personal reasons. It
is an equivalent of TOEFL exams.
TCF has three required and two optional components:

TCF is structured as a comprehensive test of French language
ability

It is fully
standardized
and
calibrated
– The test is built around a rigorous test methodology in
order to provide a precise grading of proficiency.

Test scores provide an
accurate
benchmark of the candidate's language ability using the
six-level proficiency scale of the Council of Europe.
Each candidate is awarded a certificate. This certificate
features:

Name of testing centre and date of test

Candidate's name and reference number
-
Candidate's date of birth, nationality, birthplace and mother
tongue(s)

Test results: overall score and level
-
Breakdown of test results by score and level
-
Scores (out of 20) obtained in optional tests, as appropriate.
The reverse side of the certificate shows: the grading scales
for each test score along with breakdowns of the grading scale
and competency items. The grading system is designed to provide
concrete indications of the candidate's language proficiencies
(e.g. "candidate is able to…"), thereby giving potential
employers and education authorities a guide to the certificate
holder's ability to understand and communicate in French.
